(PR Web, December 22, 2009) Milpitas, Calif. (Vocus/PRWEB ) December 22, 2009 -- Textbook buyback site MyBookBuyer.com has again engaged the students who sell textbooks through their online service to raise money for a worthy cause. MyBookBuyer challenged their users to show their support by joining their Facebook fan page, pledging to donate $500 when they hit 4,000 fans. They blew past their goal in eight days.

Students responded by becoming fans and inviting their friends in record numbers, show just how strongly they feel about supporting an important cause like Toys for Tots.

This isn’t the first time the textbook buyback site has called on their Facebook fan base to support an important cause. In October the company was inspired by Breast Cancer Awareness Month to help raise money to fight the deadly disease. After pledging to donate a dollar for every fan that joined the page, MyBookBuyer raised a total of more than fifteen hundred dollars. At the start of November, they made their donation of $1,522 to Susan G. Komen for the cure, the leader in the fight against breast cancer, both in promoting awareness and supporting breast cancer research.

The response was so great that the company decided to call on their fans again, this time to raise money to get toys to underprivileged children at the holidays. The students who sell used textbooks to MyBookBuyer have shown that they have the desire to support worthy causes, if not the resources.

“This is a way for students to support important causes, without having to dig into their wallets,” says company spokesman Richard Converse, “They just have to provide the enthusiasm, we’ll worry about providing the money.”

Allowing students to participate in fundraising without having to actually contribute money was an idea born out of a sensitivity to the financial burden that students today are under. With tuition, textbooks and fees all rising, the students who are selling textbooks on MyBookBuyer.com just don’t have the extra cash to donate to causes they would otherwise want to support.

One such cause is Toys for Tots, an organization run by the Marine Corps Reserve that has distributed toys to less fortunate children for over 50 years. MyBookBuyer hit their first fundraising goal just eight days after announcing that they would donate $500 to Toys for Tots. A fan wrote on their wall that he wished they could hit 8,000 fans and donate twice as much. MyBookBuyer took that challenge to heart, encouraging all their fans to invite their friends, and promised to donate another $500. While they didn’t meet their second goal, the response was overwhelming, with nearly 2,500 fans joining to show their support in just 10 days.

In recognition of the huge outpouring of support, MyBookBuyer decided to make an additional $250 contribution, bringing their total donation to Toys for Tots up to $750.

The students who use MyBookBuyer to sell back textbooks can feel proud of the fact that their enthusiasm inspired the site to reach for goals beyond what they had originally set out to accomplish. While the company and the students may not have gotten to double the original goal, together they were able to raise more for an important cause than anyone had first thought possible.
